Our Theory of Change

Conventional farming & forestry Regenerative systems

The problem

Our world is faced with major environmental challenges: soil degradation, biodiversity collapse, water stress and climate emergency. Conventional farming and forestry are major contributors to these problems.

The solution

There are proven ecological approaches that can grow the food and materials we need while restoring soils, preserving water, adding biodiversity and sequestering carbon. By partnering with skilled farmers and foresters, SLM is helping scale up these ecological practices across more land.

Zooming into Agriculture

Key Practices of Regenerative Agriculture

Regenerative agriculture practices illustration

Cover Crops

Utilise cover crops to support soil health, carbon capture and biodiversity.

No / Min Tillage

Reduce soil disturbance to protect soil structure and boost soil carbon storage.

Integrate Livestock

Integrate grazing into crop rotations to upcycle nutrients, suppress weeds and enhance soil carbon sequestration.

Plant Hedges & Trees

Plant native hedges and trees for biodiversity and carbon credits, and plant commercial tree species for carbon and timber revenue.

Holistic Grazing

Develop fencing and water to allow controlled grazing with larger herds in smaller paddocks over shorter periods of time.

Substitute Inputs

Reduce synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, apply biological soil amendments, and reduce usage of antibiotics.

Diversify

Diversify within the property and through time β€” crop rotations, diverse livestock.

Perennial Grass

Establish and promote perennial and diverse grassland systems.

Our Five Impact Themes

Through our strategies, we seek to deliver positive impact across five key impact themes.

Climate

Turn landscapes into carbon sinks and increase resilience to climate extremes.

Biodiversity

Improve species diversity on farms and in forests, across productive and non-productive areas.

Soil Health

Reverse land degradation and build healthy living soils.

Water

Increase water use efficiency and reduce pollution of waterways.

Communities

Revitalize rural communities while growing safe healthy products for consumers.
